Unfinished / Stain Ready vs. Rubio Monocoat Finishes

Choose the Finish Stage That Fits Your Project

Our Wood Veneer Floating Shelves are available either Unfinished / Stain Ready or with selected Rubio Monocoat finishes, depending on the veneer species.

The distinction is important. Unfinished / Stain Ready shelves are intended for customers who want to apply their own finish after delivery. Rubio-finished shelves arrive with the selected finish applied at our factory and are intended to be installed as received.

Unfinished / Stain Ready

Choose Unfinished / Stain Ready when you want control over the final color and finish system.

  • No Rubio Monocoat finish is applied.
  • The real wood veneer remains unfinished so it can accept a compatible field-applied stain or finish.
  • This option is appropriate when the shelf must be matched to existing cabinetry, flooring, millwork, furniture, or a project-specific finish schedule.
  • The final appearance and performance are determined by the finishing system applied after delivery.

Because wood is a natural material, we recommend testing the intended stain or finish on a representative sample before finishing the completed shelf. Species, grain, veneer selection, sanding, stain chemistry, and application technique can all affect the final color.

Preparation Before Field Finishing

The shelf is supplied as an unfinished architectural wood-veneer product, but the field finisher is responsible for final preparation appropriate to the selected coating system. Follow the stain or finish manufacturer's sanding and preparation requirements rather than assuming that one grit sequence is correct for every product.

Remove dust and contaminants before applying finish, and avoid introducing oils, sealers, or other products that could interfere with the intended finishing system.

Factory-Applied Rubio Monocoat Finish

Choose a Rubio Monocoat option when you want the shelf delivered with the selected wood finish already applied.

Rubio Monocoat is the factory finish system currently used for our finished Wood Veneer shelves. Available colors depend on the veneer species because the same finish can look substantially different on different woods.

  • The finish is applied before shipment.
  • The shelf is intended to be installed without additional staining.
  • Wood grain and natural variation remain visible.
  • The selected finish becomes part of the manufactured product specification.

A finished shelf should not be treated as though it were still raw veneer. Applying conventional stain over an existing Rubio finish is not the same process as staining unfinished wood and can produce unpredictable results.

What Does “Pure” Mean?

Where offered, Rubio Monocoat Pure is a finished option, not an unfinished or “clear coat” option. It is intended to retain a comparatively natural wood appearance while still applying the Rubio finish system.

It should not be interpreted as invisible. Any applied finish can change the perceived color, contrast, and grain character of real wood. The effect also varies by species.

Why We No Longer Use “Clear Coat” as the Main Description

The phrase clear coat can imply a conventional transparent film finish such as lacquer, polyurethane, or varnish. That is not the terminology we use for the current Wood Veneer shelf program.

For current products, the choices are more accurately described as:

  • Unfinished / Stain Ready — no Rubio finish applied
  • Rubio Monocoat finish — factory-applied finish in one of the species-specific options shown in the product configurator

Which Option Should I Choose?

Choose Unfinished / Stain Ready if:

  • you need to match another wood finish on the project;
  • your painter, cabinet shop, or millwork finisher will apply the final finish;
  • the project has a specified stain or coating system;
  • you want complete control over the final tone.

Choose a Rubio Monocoat finish if:

  • you want the shelf delivered finished and ready for installation;
  • one of our standard species-specific finishes fits the project;
  • you prefer to avoid coordinating field finishing after delivery.

Natural Variation Is Expected

Real wood veneer is not a printed surface. Grain pattern, color, figure, and how the wood responds to finish will vary from shelf to shelf and from sample to completed product.

That variation is inherent to natural wood and should be considered when specifying multiple shelves for the same room or project.

For screen-image limitations, samples, lighting, and finish-matching expectations, see our Color, Finish & Natural Material Variation Guide.

Related Construction Guide

The finish sits on a shelf shell built with CNC-machined precision miter joints. See our Precision Miter Joint Construction Guide to understand how the veneered panels are joined before finishing.
