Precision Miter Joints: How Our Shelves and Pedestals Are Built

Floating shelf and mantel panel specification: Floating shelves and fireplace mantels are built from 3/4-inch panels: unfinished MDF for Paint Ready products, the same MDF with a factory finish for Painted products, or genuine wood veneer on an MDF-core panel for Wood Veneer products. Panel thickness is distinct from the finished shelf thickness or mantel height selected in the configurator.

What Are Precision Miter Joints?

Precision miter joints bring two accurately cut, angled panel edges together to form a clean corner. At a square outside corner, the two 45-degree faces meet to create a 90-degree joint.

Gentry Stinson uses precision miter joints in the panel construction of our floating shelves, fireplace mantels, and display pedestals. The panels are machined before assembly, then bonded and held in alignment as the adhesive cures.

Clean Architectural Corners

The exterior panel faces meet at the miter, giving the finished product a clean corner without a square exposed core edge at that joint. On wood veneer products, genuine wood veneer forms the visible surface.

Accurate machining, careful fit, adhesive application, and controlled assembly work together to create the finished joint.

How the Joint Is Made

  1. Panel components are cut to the dimensions required for the product.
  2. The mating edges are machined to the required miter angle.
  3. The parts are checked for fit, alignment, and corner closure.
  4. Adhesive is applied to the mating faces.
  5. The panels are assembled and held square with appropriate clamping or fixturing while the adhesive cures.
  6. The completed assembly is inspected for corner alignment, surface condition, and overall geometry.

Built Around Each Product

Floating shelves: the hollow panel shell provides the architectural form and preserves interior space for concealed mounting hardware.

Fireplace mantels: the panel construction creates the finished beam profile, with an open back for concealed mounting access.

Display pedestals: four vertical sides and a finished top form a five-panel box. The bottom remains intentionally open for access to wiring, lighting components, leveling feet, or other installation requirements.

These products are supplied factory assembled.

Materials and Finish

Paint Ready products use unfinished 3/4-inch MDF. Painted products use 3/4-inch MDF with a factory finish. Wood Veneer products use genuine wood veneer on 3/4-inch MDF-core panels. Panel thickness is separate from the overall shelf thickness, mantel height, or pedestal dimensions selected in the configurator.

Consistent panels support accurate machining and fitting. The final appearance also depends on the selected surface material and finish.

Mounting and Load Capacity

Standard Floating Shelves use the Stinson Mounting System, incorporating HOVR interlocking bracket components. Single Return and Wall-to-Wall shelves use concealed cleat-based mounting suited to their side conditions.

Joint construction alone does not establish a load rating. Floating-shelf capacity depends on the complete product and installation, including dimensions, mounting configuration, wall construction, fasteners, attachment to structure, and load placement. Pedestal loading depends on the complete pedestal dimensions, substrate, assembly, and top loading.
