LED Light Ready Specification & Planning Guide

Floating shelf and mantel panel specification: Floating shelves and fireplace mantels are built from 3/4-inch panels: unfinished MDF for Paint Ready products, the same MDF with a factory finish for Painted products, or genuine wood veneer on an MDF-core panel for Wood Veneer products. Panel thickness is distinct from the finished shelf thickness or mantel height selected in the configurator.

What “LED Light Ready” Means

LED Light Ready is a fabrication option for customers who want to integrate their own 24-volt LED lighting system into a Gentry Stinson shelf.

We machine the selected channel location into the shelf and provide the aluminum LED channel and diffuser. The shelf is prepared for field installation of customer-supplied LED tape and electrical components.

LED Light Ready does not include the LED strip, driver, dimmer, controller, low-voltage wiring, line-voltage wiring, switching equipment, or electrical installation.

What We Supply

  • Factory-machined LED channel location
  • Aluminum LED channel
  • Diffuser lens
  • Preparation for low-voltage LED integration

The LED Light Ready option is intended to give the installer a clean architectural starting point while allowing the designer, electrician, or homeowner to select the lighting system that best fits the project.

Available Channel Positions

Each LED Light Ready shelf is configured with one channel position. The available positions are:

  • Top Front — directs light upward from the front portion of the shelf and can provide a softer ambient effect.
  • Top Rear — directs light upward near the wall and is useful when the goal is to wash or accent the wall surface above the shelf.
  • Bottom Front — directs light downward toward the front of the shelf and is often appropriate for display or task-oriented illumination.
  • Bottom Rear — directs light downward near the wall and can create a more concealed wall-wash effect below the shelf.

Select the channel position in the product configurator before adding the shelf to your cart. The selected position becomes part of the fabrication specification for that shelf.

Why We Standardize Around 24 Volts

Our LED Light Ready preparation is intended for 24V DC constant-voltage LED tape systems.

For a given wattage, a 24V system operates at lower current than a 12V system. In practical architectural installations, that can help reduce conductor losses and voltage drop, particularly where the driver is located remotely or where multiple shelves are being powered from one system.

Twenty-four-volt LED tape is also widely available in professional-grade, dimmable, high-CRI formats.

Recommended LED Tape Specifications

The exact LED product is your choice, but for residential, hospitality, retail, or architectural millwork applications we recommend selecting tape with the following characteristics:

  • Voltage: 24V DC constant voltage
  • Color Rendering: CRI 90+ minimum; 95+ is preferable where artwork, finishes, wood tones, or merchandise color accuracy is important
  • Color Temperature: typically 2700K or 3000K for warm residential interiors; 3500K or 4000K may be appropriate for brighter task, commercial, or display applications
  • Dimming: select tape, driver, and controls that are designed to work together as one dimming system
  • Light Quality: high-density tape or COB-style tape can help minimize visible diode patterning through the diffuser
  • Physical Fit: verify that the LED tape width and connector method are compatible with the supplied aluminum channel before installation

Avoid choosing an LED strip solely by advertised wattage or brightness. Color quality, dimming compatibility, thermal management, physical width, and driver compatibility are equally important.

Choosing Color Temperature

Color temperature has a major effect on how the shelf and surrounding materials appear.

  • 2700K — warm, relaxed light that works well with residential interiors, walnut, alder, warm whites, and traditional incandescent-like lighting schemes
  • 3000K — warm but slightly cleaner; a versatile choice for kitchens, living spaces, millwork, and contemporary interiors
  • 3500K — more neutral and useful where the shelf is part of a brighter architectural lighting scheme
  • 4000K — crisp neutral light more commonly used for task, commercial, gallery, or retail applications

Whenever possible, match the shelf lighting to the surrounding architectural lighting. Mixing noticeably different color temperatures in the same room can make otherwise well-designed lighting feel inconsistent.

Brightness and Wattage

There is no single correct lumen output for every shelf. The appropriate level depends on whether the lighting is decorative, task-oriented, or intended to illuminate merchandise or artwork.

Before purchasing LED tape, consider:

  • the length of each shelf
  • the number of shelves on the circuit
  • the desired brightness
  • the distance between the shelf and the surface being illuminated
  • ambient room lighting
  • whether the system will normally be dimmed

Higher-output tape is not automatically better. In many applications, a moderate-output strip paired with a good dimming system provides more usable control than an unnecessarily high-output strip.

Driver Selection and Sizing

Use a quality 24V constant-voltage driver that is compatible with the selected LED tape and the intended dimming/control method.

To size the driver, first determine the total connected LED load:

Total LED watts = LED watts per foot × total feet of LED tape

Then select a driver with adequate capacity in accordance with the LED and driver manufacturers’ loading requirements. Do not exceed the driver’s rated output.

If multiple shelves are connected to one driver, include the combined load of all connected tape. Long wire runs and larger systems should also be evaluated for conductor size and voltage drop.

Dimming and Controls

There are several valid ways to control a 24V LED system. The correct approach depends on the project.

Common arrangements include:

  • a dimmable 24V driver controlled by a compatible wall dimmer
  • a constant-voltage driver paired with a compatible low-voltage dimming controller
  • architectural control systems, smart-home systems, or other project-specific controls designed for constant-voltage LED loads

The LED tape, driver, dimmer, and controller must be electrically compatible. Do not assume that components from different systems will dim properly together.

Plan the Wiring Before Installing the Shelf

The cleanest installations are planned before the shelf is mounted.

Determine in advance:

  • where the 24V driver will be located
  • where low-voltage wiring will emerge at the shelf
  • whether multiple shelves will share one driver or be controlled independently
  • where dimmers or controls will be located
  • how the driver will remain accessible for future service

We recommend locating drivers and control equipment in an accessible, appropriate location rather than permanently concealing serviceable electronics inside the shelf or wall unless the equipment and installation method are specifically approved for that use.

Installation Sequence

  1. Confirm the LED tape, driver, controls, and wiring plan before installing the shelf.
  2. Complete any required line-voltage and low-voltage rough wiring.
  3. Install and test the LED tape in the supplied aluminum channel.
  4. Verify polarity, color temperature, dimming operation, and brightness before final assembly.
  5. Install the diffuser.
  6. Complete the shelf installation and perform a final lighting test.

Electrical Responsibility

Gentry Stinson supplies the physical LED Light Ready preparation only. Electrical design, wiring, driver selection, controls, connections, code compliance, and commissioning are the responsibility of the customer and installer.

All electrical work must comply with applicable local codes and manufacturer instructions. When line-voltage wiring or permanently installed electrical equipment is involved, use a qualified electrician.

Third-Party Component Compatibility

Because customers select their own LED tape, drivers, dimmers, controllers, and wiring methods, Gentry Stinson cannot guarantee compatibility or performance among third-party electrical components.

Before ordering electrical components, confirm that the complete system is designed to operate together at 24V DC and that the selected LED tape physically fits the supplied channel.
