Color, Finish & Natural Material Variation Guide

How to Read Color and Finish Images on Our Site

Product photography, digital swatches, renderings, and screen previews are useful for selecting a general color and material direction, but they are not a calibrated substitute for viewing the actual material in your project environment.

Color appearance can change with screen settings, photography, image compression, browser rendering, room lighting, surrounding finishes, and viewing angle. For that reason, the physical product—not the image displayed on a phone, tablet, or monitor—is the controlling reference.

Painted Floating Shelves

Our standard Painted Floating Shelf program uses specified Sherwin-Williams colors. The color name and manufacturer code shown in the product configurator are the controlling color references.

A digital swatch should be treated as a visual guide only. Even when the correct paint formula is used, the finished appearance can vary with sheen, substrate, primer, application method, lighting, and adjacent materials.

Our current standard palette includes:

  • Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008
  • Sherwin-Williams Natural Linen SW 9109
  • Sherwin-Williams Universal Khaki SW 6150
  • Sherwin-Williams Halcyon Green SW 6213
  • Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258

The product configurator is the controlling source for the currently available palette.

Real Wood Veneer

Real wood is naturally variable. Grain pattern, figure, color, mineral markings, knots, and overall tone can differ from one veneer panel to another.

Those differences are normal characteristics of genuine wood veneer and should not be interpreted as a manufacturing defect simply because the delivered shelf does not exactly duplicate a website photograph or sample.

When several shelves are ordered for the same room, they will be manufactured to the same selected species and finish specification, but exact visual duplication between pieces should not be expected.

See our Real Wood Veneer Species Guide for more information about Rift White Oak, Maple, Clear Alder, and Knotty Alder.

Rubio Monocoat Finishes

A Rubio Monocoat color name does not represent a single fixed color independent of the wood beneath it. The same finish can appear different on different species because the underlying wood tone, grain, and figure remain part of the final appearance.

For example, a finish applied to Rift White Oak will not necessarily read the same way when applied to Maple or Alder. Natural variation within a single species can also affect the result.

For current species-specific finish selections, see Unfinished / Stain Ready vs. Rubio Monocoat Finishes.

Unfinished / Stain Ready Products

Unfinished / Stain Ready Wood Veneer shelves are supplied without a factory-applied Rubio finish so that the customer, painter, cabinet shop, or project finisher can apply the final stain or coating system.

Because the final finish is applied after delivery, we cannot predict or warrant the exact color produced by a third-party stain, dye, oil, toner, sealer, or coating system.

Species, sanding sequence, stain chemistry, application method, number of coats, topcoat, and job-site conditions can all influence the finished appearance. Testing the intended system on a representative material sample before finishing the completed product is recommended.

Physical Samples

If color or material coordination is important to the project, a physical sample is a better reference than a screen image.

A sample can help evaluate:

  • general wood tone and grain character;
  • how a Rubio finish interacts with a particular species;
  • paint color under the project's actual lighting;
  • compatibility with flooring, cabinetry, stone, tile, fabrics, or wall finishes.

A sample is still a representative reference rather than a guarantee of exact duplication. This is especially important with natural wood, where the sample and production veneer will not have identical grain and color.

Lighting Changes Perceived Color

The same finish can look noticeably different under daylight, warm residential lighting, cooler commercial lighting, or mixed light sources.

Surrounding materials also influence perception. A warm white shelf next to cool gray stone may appear warmer than the same shelf viewed against natural wood or a cream-colored wall.

For color-sensitive projects, evaluate samples in the room where the product will actually be installed and, when possible, under both daytime and nighttime lighting conditions.

Photography and Renderings

Some website images may include staged photography, edited photography, or design renderings intended to show product configuration, proportion, or design intent.

These images should not be used as calibrated color standards. The written material, species, finish name, manufacturer color code, and order specification control over the appearance of a digital image.

Custom Color and Finish Matching

We can evaluate project-specific colors and finish requirements separately from the standard online program.

If a project requires coordination with an existing cabinet finish, paint standard, physical control sample, architect's finish schedule, or other reference, contact us before ordering. The requirement should be documented and approved as part of the project specification rather than inferred from an uploaded photograph or screen image.

Email support@gentrystinson.com with the product, quantity, finish requirement, and available physical or manufacturer references.

When Exact Matching Matters

If exact matching is critical, do not rely solely on website imagery. Contact us before placing the order so we can determine whether the requested level of matching is practical for the selected material and finish system.

Natural wood variation cannot be eliminated, and digital color cannot be guaranteed across different devices. The goal is to define the product accurately enough that the customer and our production team are working from the same physical or manufacturer-controlled reference whenever precision matters.
