DIY Decorative Hood Surrounds: Plan Around the Insert

Gentry Stinson · Project guide

DIY Learning Center / All resources

This guide covers the decorative enclosure around a listed range-hood insert. It does not cover making a blower, grease filter, electrical system or improvised ventilation appliance. Select the insert and cooking appliance first, then coordinate with qualified ventilation and electrical professionals.

Tools & materials

  • Exact insert, liner and cooking-appliance models with current manuals and drawings.
  • Elevations showing cabinets, ceiling, range, duct route and service access.
  • Tape, square, level, mockup materials and appropriate woodworking tools.
  • Specified enclosure material, structural support, compatible finish and adequate lifting assistance.

Before you begin

  • Compare both appliance manuals for mounting height and combustible clearances. Dimensions from another kitchen are not a specification.
  • Confirm cutout, liner, flange, fastener locations and removable-filter access against the actual insert before cutting.
  • Have duct routing, discharge, combustion-air/backdraft concerns, makeup air and electrical work evaluated by qualified professionals.
  • Decide how insert and surround are supported and serviced. Keep combustible trim outside all restricted areas.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. Freeze the appliance selection

Record complete model numbers and manual revisions. Nominal width is not a cutout dimension. Verify compatibility of insert, liner, cooking appliance and installation conditions.

  2. Draw a section

Show cooktop, insert bottom, liner, shell, duct connection and structure. Mark each required clearance as a value to obtain from the actual manuals, not a guessed standard.

  3. Plan support and service

Locate structural attachment independently of decorative trim. Keep filters, controls and required service compartments reachable. Do not permanently trap the appliance behind glued woodwork.

  4. Mock up and dry-fit

Review proportions and door swings with a lightweight mockup. On the bench compare the approved opening with actual components, including room for installation tools.

  5. Build the decorative enclosure

Use suitable joinery and stable panels. Preserve insert and liner interfaces. Never modify the insert or substitute wood for required metal components.

  6. Finish before final mechanical work

Allow the coating to cure as specified. Keep coatings off appliance components, labels, openings and filters. A coating does not make wood noncombustible.

  7. Coordinate installation and handover

Qualified personnel complete the required mechanical and electrical work and verify support, clearance and operation. Confirm cleaning access and retain manuals and model details.

Failure points & what to do

Symptom Check Next step
Insert will not fit Nominal dimensions used instead of actual cutout and liner. Compare manual and components; do not trim appliance flanges.
Filters or controls trapped Trim crosses the service envelope. Revise the enclosure before operation.
Vibration Incorrect support or contact with mechanical components. Have the assembly inspected; do not wedge foam into ventilation equipment.
Poor capture or unusual heat Duct, air-supply or equipment issue. Call qualified ventilation personnel; the decorative shell cannot fix the system.

A model-specific manual example

The Broan PM300SS / BBN1 manual requires qualified installation and electrical work, attention to hidden utilities, and specified ducting and clearances. Its dimensions do not apply universally. It also covers liners, cabinet preparation, filters and service.

Common questions

What clearance should I use?

Use the exact range and insert manuals and local requirements. A generic number would be misleading.

Can the entire hood be wood?

Use a listed insert and every required liner/component. This guide only addresses a suitable decorative surround.

Does a larger fan always solve poor capture?

No. Duct design, air supply, equipment compatibility and local requirements must be evaluated together.
